Chicago Cubs 5, New York Mets 1
Tigers 1, Twins 0 – Boyd terrific, Upton homers as Tigers shut down Twins 1-0
Matt Boyd allowed three hits over six innings and the Detroit Tigers beat Minnesota 1-0 on Monday night. The defeat handed the last-place Twins another loss just hours after they announced the firing of general manager Terry Ryan. Justin Upton homered in the second to back Boyd (1-2), who struck out seven with one walk and provided a welcome boost to a rotation that has shown little depth of late. Three relievers finished for the Tigers, with Francisco Rodriguez pitching a hitless ninth for his 26th save in 28 chances. Monday was the longest scoreless start of the 25-year-old Boyd’s career. The Tigers acquired him in last year’s trade that sent David Price to Toronto. Upton’s home run was the 200th of his career.
Mariners 4, White Sox 3 – Lind’s pinch-hit homer in 9th lifts Seattle past White Sox
Adam Lind hit a three-run pinch-hit homer in the ninth inning to give the Seattle Mariners a comeback and walk-off 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox last night. The Mariners handed the Sox their fifth consecutive loss, with Chicago wasting a dominant performance by Chris Sale. David Rollins (1-0) pitched the ninth inning for the win. Seattle, which had managed just one hit in eight innings off Sale, rallied against closer David Robertson (0-2), who had recorded 13 straight save opportunities. Sale was bidding to become the first 15-game winner in the majors and allowed just a first-inning single en route to eight scoreless innings. Tim Anderson and Todd Frazier homered to account for all of the runs for the White Sox.
Cubs 5, Mets 1 – Rizzo homers as Cubs beat Mets 5-1
Anthony Rizzo hit a three-run homer and Jon Lester pitched 7 2/3 innings as the Chicago Cubs beat the New York Mets 5-1 last night, halting an 8-game losing skid. The All-Star slugger is batting .339 with three homers and 10 RBIs in July. The last time the Mets had visited the iconic neighborhood ballpark, they finished off a sweep of the Cubs to advance to the World Series. They also swept Chicago again in New York from June 30 to July 3, roughing up Lester for one of the wins. Lester allowed one run with a leadoff seventh inning homer from Wilmer Flores and improved to 10-4. Steven Matz took the loss to fall to 7-6. Matz (7-6) was charged with four runs and eight hits in five-plus innings. The rookie left-hander dropped to 0-5 in his last nine starts.

NBA – Valentine’s buzzer beater gives Bulls title at Summer League
Denzel Valentine put a thrilling finish on the NBA Summer League. Valentine hit the tying 3-pointer in the final second of regulation and made a jumper at the buzzer in overtime to give the Chicago Bulls an 84-82 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday night. Valentine was scoreless on 0-for-6 shooting through three quarters, but he proved that fortunes change quickly in Las Vegas. The game ended the NBA portion of summer basketball over the last two weeks. Rookies got their first looks, some veterans got their last shots, and it ended with a play that had Twitter buzzing like a game that took place in June instead of July. And just as the NBA stops, USA Basketball starts. Right on the same UNLV campus just hours before the summer league championship game, the U.S. Olympic team held its first training camp practice. The Olympics start on Aug. 5 in Rio de Janeiro, with the Americans looking for a third straight gold medal.
NFL – In `peanut punch’ video, Tillman says he’s retiring from NFL
Longtime Chicago Bears cornerback Charles Tillman is retiring from the NFL after 13 seasons. The 35-year-old Tillman, known for his “peanut punch” after forcing 44 career fumbles, spent his first 12 seasons with the Bears and went to two Pro Bowls. He started 12 games last season with the Carolina Panthers before suffering a season-ending knee injury and missing the team’s run to the Super Bowl. Carolina didn’t attempt to re-sign him. Tillman announced his retirement Monday on Twitter, posting a YouTube video of him knocking things out of people’s hands, including a doughnut his daughter was eating. A second-round pick in 2003, Tillman started 164 games during his career and was named the Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2013.
NFL – Dolphins reach deal with Foster
Four-time Pro Bowl running back Arian Foster has agreed to a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins. The free agent is attempting a comeback from a torn Achilles tendon suffered last season with Houston. Miami was looking to add depth at running back following the loss of Lamar
Miller to the Texans in free agency. Injuries have limited Foster to 25 games in the past three years, and he played in just four games last season, averaging 2.6 yards per carry. Foster’s most recent Pro Bowl season was 2014, when he rushed for 1,246 yards and caught passes for 327 in 13 games.
NFL – Another return to Lambeau for Number-4
Former Packers quarterback Brett Favre plans to make another special trip back to Lambeau Field. The Packers say Favre will appear at a halftime ceremony of Green Bay’s game on Oct. 16 against Dallas. The ceremony will honor Favre’s induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which will take place on Aug. 6 in Canton, Ohio.
NFL – Computer chips come to the NFL
The NFL will test computer chips in footballs this preseason to determine how well the balls perform, particularly in the kicking game. Data collected from the chips also could help with officiating in the future, including goal-line and short-yardage plays. Included among the data that will be collected is how far the ball travels on a particular play, and the ball’s proximity to the goal posts on a field goal or extra point. Such information can be used in determining if the distance between uprights needs to be shortened.
Olympics – Russian doping scandal update
The World Anti-Doping Agency’s executive board has called on the International Olympic Committee to ban all Russian teams from the Rio Olympics. That came after an investigator looking into Russian doping found the country’s state-directed cheating program resulted in at least 312 falsified results in a four-year period through 2015. WADA also wants Russian government officials to be denied access to international competitions, including the upcoming Olympics. Russian President Vladimir Putin reacted by saying the officials named in the report as being directly responsible for widespread doping will be suspended pending a thorough investigation.
