After flooding and tornadoes in Michigan, Michigan State Police, FEMA, and the Small Business Administration are beginning to assess damage.
Lauren Thompson is with MSP Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division and told us more.
“We’re looking at damage to primary homes, primary living space in homes,” Thompson said. “I think this is a very important distinction to make. A lot of residents have had flooding, tornado damage. The damage that will be counted, very much considered in these damage assessments needs to be to a primary residence, living rooms, kitchen, bathrooms, heating and cooling systems.”
Thompson says they’re assessing damage in 30 counties and the city of Kalamazoo over the next few weeks, even though 40 counties have damage. The counties they are looking at include Allegan, Barry, and Lake in west Michigan.
Thompson says the assessments will help Governor Gretchen Whitmer decide if she’ll request a federal disaster declaration from the president.
