Tigers 8, Padres 2 – Kevin McGonigle begins his career with 4 hits in Tigers’ 8-2 win over Padres on opening day
Kevin McGonigle got four hits in his auspicious major league debut during the Detroit Tigers’ 8-2 victory over the San Diego Padres. The 21-year-old McGonigle hit a two-run double with the bases loaded on the first big league pitch he saw in the first inning. He added a second double and an infield single while scoring two runs. Dillon Dingler homered and drove in three runs while Detroit jumped to an 8-0 lead in the fifth inning. Two-time AL Cy Young award winner Tarik Skubal pitched six innings of three-hit ball for Detroit. San Diego struggled in the debut of manager Craig Stammen.

Jake Bauers hit a three-run homer, Sal Frelick produced a two-run blast and William Contreras delivered a three-run double as the Brewers began their pursuit of a fourth straight NL Central title. Misiorowski’s 11 strikeouts were the most by a Brewers pitcher in a season opener. Chicago’s Chase Meidroth and Munetaka Murakami homered for the White Sox.

Nats 10, Cubs 4 – Nationals beat Cubs 10-4 on opening day for manager Blake Butera’s first win with the team
Brady House, Joey Wiemer and Jacob Young homered for Washington on opening day, and the Nationals beat Alex Bregman and the Chicago Cubs 10-4 for manager Blake Butera’s first win with the team. CJ Abrams hit a tiebreaking two-run single during Washington’s six-run fourth inning on a blustery afternoon at Wrigley Field. Butera is part of a new leadership group for the rebuilding Nationals after they went 66-96 last year in their sixth straight losing season. Paul Toboni took over as the team’s president of baseball operations on Oct. 1, and he hired the 33-year-old Butera out of Tampa Bay’s front office. Michael Busch had three hits for Chicago.

They’re looking for a different outcome this time after losing to Purdue in the Big Ten championship game two weeks ago. The Wolverines will try to set the program record for wins. Alabama is in the Sweet 16 for the fourth straight year. The Crimson Tide made the Final Four two years ago and advanced to the Elite Eight last season. Iowa State meets Tennessee in the other Sweet 16 matchup in Chicago.

NCAA – Judge denies NCAA’s requiest to make DraftKings stop using ‘March Madness’
A federal judge on Thursday denied the NCAA’s motion for a temporary restraining order to stop DraftKings from using registered trademarks associated with its men’s and women’s basketball tournaments. The complaint for trademark infringement was filed in the Southern District of Indiana last week. The NCAA requested that DraftKings stop using March Madness, Final Four, Elite Eight and Sweet Sixteen and variations of those terms to promote its business. Judge Tanya Walton Pratt ruled the NCAA did not show how the online sports wagering platform’s use of the terms would cause irreparable harm.
