U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin is calling for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and White House Advisor Stephen Miller to resign, be fired, or in Noem’s case, be impeached.
In a speech on the Senate floor Wednesday, Slotkin addressed the fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti during immigration enforcement operations in Minneapolis, asking colleagues how they would feel if the things happening there were happening in their own cities. Slokin added the Trump administration could do it anywhere.
“We are experiencing a cultural moment in the United States of America that cuts to the heart of who we are as Americans and it relates to the behavior of federal forces in our streets,” Slotkin said. “It strikes to the heart of who we are as Americans.”
Slotkin said the administration needs to be held accountable.
“Michiganders have been clear with me that there need to be consequences for this kind of anti-American behavior. And that starts with leadership.”
Slotkin said 32 people died in ICE custody in 2025, including one in Baldwin, Michigan. She added that’s the most fatalities in one year in more than two decades.
Senator Gary Peters has joined Slotkin’s call for the ouster Noem, one way or another.
“She should resign. If she doesn’t resign, the president should do what he’s done in the past and fire her. And if she doesn’t get fired, she should be impeached. Because while she’s not the only one who are the brains behind these operations, she was the one who got the big job. She was the one who sat in front of many of us for Senate confirmation. And she has done nothing to defend the values that she claimed to hold her hand up and swear to protect.”
Slotkin voted to confirm Noem in January of 2025, but says she did so in recognition of the fact the Michigan is a border state that does need the attention of Homeland Security. However, she added Noem has proven has proven over and over again that she does not deserve the title of cabinet secretary.
