The MSU Extension office in Van Buren County is planning a free, day-long workshop for grain growers to learn about better ways to market their products.

Extension educator John Laporte tells us the “Beyond the Bin Grain Marketing Workshop” came about after years of discussions with growers who can find it overwhelming to navigate the market. He says it’ll be especially helpful for growers who trade their crops on commodities markets.

Those different local markets sometimes impact the price that people are looking at,” Laporte said. “And then of course you have the global market, which also has an impact on the price that producers can receive. So trying to navigate that mix between the local and kind of global market creates this area where there can be a lot of uncertainty and how really to go about starting to think about what’s a good price, what’s a bad price, how do I set some targets, those types of things.”

The workshop will take a hands-on approach to covering marketing principles like goal setting, decision deadlines, and more.

Laporte and fellow MSU Extension educator Nicolle Ritchie will lead the discussions set for December 4 at the MSU Extension office in Hartford. Laporte invites any grain growers who might be interested to register.
