Paul Layendecker’s “WAY BACK WHEN” for Friday, Oct. 3, 2025

1951, Bobby Thomson of the New York Giants hit the “Shot Heard Around the World”, a three-run homer in the bottom of the 9th of the final game in a three-game playoff against the Brooklyn Dodgers.  With that hit, the Giants won the pennant.

TV History: 1955, “Captain Kangaroo” and “The Mickey Mouse Club” both premiered. The Dick VanDyke show debuted on this day in 1961.

 

 Music History:

1945, a 10-year-old Elvis Aaron Presley made his first public appearance, in a talent show at the Mississippi-Alabama Dairy Show.  He said he took 5th place.

1992: On Saturday Night Live, Sinead O’Connor tore up a photo of the Pope during her performance of “War.” One of the most controversial TV moments in music history.
