Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammad will be in Lansing Tuesday to lend his voice to the call for the approval of a state budget.

Democratic leaders from the state Senate and Republican leaders from the state House are at odds over the next spending plan and have been locked in a stalemate for months. If they don’t reach a deal by the deadline, there will be a state government shutdown.

Muhammad said during Monday’s Benton Harbor City Commission meeting no one will win in a government shutdown.

We have issues with funding in our schools, lunches, and many other initiatives, furlough days nobody needs,” Muhammad said. “So we’ll be working to help in the effort to get a budget passed for all Michiganders.”

Muhammad said he’s been meeting with state lawmakers for several weeks to discuss the issue, and he’ll attend an address by Governor Gretchen Whitmer on the subject. He said he’s willing to work with lawmakers from both parties to ensure a shutdown can be avoided.
