1861 The Battle of Bull Run, the first major land battle of the Civil War. More than 50,000 fought, costing some 3,000 Union casualties, 1,750 for the Confederates.
1925, The “Monkey Trial” ended in Dayton, Tennessee, with schoolteacher John T. Scopes being found guilty and fined $100 for teaching Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. The conviction was later overturned.
1972, George Carlin was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and profanity at Summerfest in Milwaukee, for performing his ‘7 Words you can’t say on TV’ routine.
