A new candidate has thrown his hat in the ring to run against Republican state Representative Brad Paquette in Michigan’s 37th state House district next year.
Gerik Maverick of Dowagiac has worked for non-profits around Southwest Michigan, including The OutCenter in Benton Harbor. He was also part of Moody on the Market’s 40 Under 40 Program class last year.
Maverick says he’s running for state House to fight for workers and children. He’s a former minister who says he remembers “relying on programs like free school lunch as my parent’s small business fell apart during the 2008 financial crisis.”
“With my experience as a credentialed minister, I learned the value of good leadership, leaders who led with wisdom, and grace, and with love,” Maverick said in a campaign video, “And that’s leadership I don’t see, both on the state side of things, and nationally.”
Maverick adds the 37th District needs “fighters, not keyboard warriors.”
Maverick says he’ll be campaigning around the 37th District in the coming months to introduce himself to voters. The 37th District includes parts of Berrien and Cass counties.
In his campaign announcement, Maverick did not specify a party affiliation.
