(8) Michigan State 81, Northwestern 55 – Ward scores 21, No. 8 Michigan State tops Northwestern 81-55
Nick Ward scored all 21 of his points in the first half to help No. 8 Michigan State build a big lead and it went on to beat Northwestern 81-55 Wednesday night. The Spartans (12-2, 3-0 Big Ten) have won seven straight this season and 10 consecutive games against the Wildcats. Northwestern (9-5, 0-3) had won three of four, losing only to No. 23 Oklahoma in overtime. Michigan State made up for the loss of shooting guard Joshua Langford, who missed the game with an injured left ankle, with five players scoring in double figures. Cassius Winston had 13 points and matched a career high with 12 assists while Xavier Tillman equaled his career high with 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Kyle Ahrens scored 11 points, and Matt McQuaid added 10.

Pistons 101, Grizzlies 94 – Griffin’s 26 points leads Pistons past Grizzlies 101-94
Blake Griffin had 26 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, and the Detroit Pistons beat the Memphis Grizzlies 101-94 on Wednesday night to snap a three-game skid. Griffin closed out a 13-0 Detroit run in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Six Pistons finished in double-figures scoring, including Reggie Jackson scoring 16 points, and Reggie Bullock and Luke Kennard with 13 each. Jaren Jackson Jr. led Memphis with 26 points and 10 rebounds, and Kyle Anderson scored 15 points. Dillon Brooks finished with 14 points off the bench as the Grizzlies dropped their third straight.
Magic 112, Bulls 84 – Vucevic leads Magic to 112-84 rout of Bulls
Nikola Vucevic had 22 points and 12 rebounds before sitting out the fourth quarter, Aaron Gordon added 18 points and a career-high nine assists, and the Orlando Magic led the entire way in a 112-84 rout of the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday night. Terrence Ross scored 15 off the bench and Evan Fournier had 13 points and seven assists for Orlando, which has won three of four. The Magic shot 58 percent from the field. Zach LaVine had 16 points while Lauri Markkanen and Kris Dunn added 14 apiece for Chicago, which has dropped two straight after winning three of four.

Flames 5, Red Wings 3 – Flames rally for 5-3 win, hand Red Wings 6th straight loss
Johnny Gaudreau’s power-play goal with 10:23 left lifted the Calgary Flames to a 5-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night. Detroit led 2-0 after one period, but the Flames rallied to hand the Red Wings their sixth straight loss. Sean Monahan, TJ Brodie, Elias Lindholm and Michael Frolik also scored for Calgary. Darren Helm, Jacob de la Rose and Andreas Athanasiou scored for Detroit. Gaudreau put the Flames ahead 4-3 after a slick play by Matthew Tkachuk, who stickhandled below the goal line and then slipped a pass between goalie Jimmy Howard and the side of the net. Gaudreau was in front to tap in the puck for his 22nd goal of the season. Frolik scored into an empty net with 17.7 seconds remaining.

NHL – Ovechkin to skip All-Star Game, take suspension
Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin says he will skip the upcoming NHL All-Star game and serve a mandatory one-game suspension as punishment. The team says the league’s leading goal-scorer wants to take advantage of the adjoining bye week to prepare for the second half of the season. NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly says Ovechkin will miss either the game before or after the All-Star break.
NCAAFB – Houston hires Holgorsen
Dana Holgorsen is back with the Houston Cougars, this time as head football coach. Holgorsen spent two seasons as Houston’s offensive coordinator in 2008-09 and just completed an eight-year run as West Virginia’s head coach. Holgorsen was 61-41 and 33-30 in the Big 12 as he helped guide West Virginia through the transition from the Big East. Holgorsen replaces Major Applewhite, who was let go last week after going 15-11 in two seasons with the Cougars.
NCAAFB – Long leaving Wolverines
Michigan cornerback David Long is forgoing his senior season to enter the NFL draft after being voted All-Big Ten in 2018 by coaches. Long had one interception, broke up eight passes and made 17 tackles as a junior. Unlike defensive teammates Rashan Gary and Devin Bush, Long chose to play in the Peach Bowl while weighing his options to stay or go pro.
NFL – Tomlin upset with Brown
Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says he wasn’t happy with Antonio Brown leading up to the team’s important game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. The star wide receiver begged out of practice Wednesday and Thursday and was told on Friday to get an MRI on his banged up knee before failing to get in touch with Tomlin on Saturday. Brown was kept out of Sunday’s lineup, and Tomlin says Brown didn’t do a good enough job of communicating and being available in the hours leading up to the game.
