School districts across Michigan are having a hard time finding and keeping teachers and other workers.

That’s according to a new report released by the Michigan Alliance for Student Opportunity with help from researchers at the University of Michigan and Michigan State University.

U of M professor Dr. Chris Torres was one of the lead researchers on the report and told Michigan News Network more.

“Michigan administrators are reporting that vacancies on average are nearly double, and applications are nearly half what they used to be when compared to prior to the pandemic,” Torres said. “Surveying interview data from different administrators and principals also suggests that hiring for staff has become a year-long effort that consumes substantial resources and attention.”

Torres says other challenges are finding qualified applicants and districts poaching teachers from their schools.

He says many administrators are also concerned about the state of education in the state.
