A Democratic effort to expel Congressman George Santos from Congress failed this week while an ethics investigation into the New York Republican moves forward. Congressman Bill Huizenga tells us as distasteful as he thinks Santos is, there is a process for handling matters like this.
“I am no fan of George Santos, and I’ve said this before, publicly, that the voters of his district in New York need to handle this,” Huizenga said. “There is an ethics investigation that has been launched, and that’s where it should reside.”
Santos is facing 13 federal counts, including wire fraud, money laundering, theft of public funds, and making materially false statements to the House. Huizenga says to remove Santos from office before the case plays out is not the way these cases are handled.
“This ultimately is up to his voters in New York to figure out whether he is fit to serve in Congress, and then of course, having the ethics review and making sure that if there was any illegalities, that those are addressed that way.”
Huizenga tells us he does believe Santos would be serving himself better by resigning. The charges against Santos come after revelations he’d lied about several aspects of his background.
