1861, The Civil War began when Confederate forces fired on Fort Sumter in South Carolina.
1955 Dr. Jonas Salk reported the success of the nationwide test of his polio vaccine and received a license by the National Institutes of Health for its general use. Before the vaccine, there were about 15,000 cases of paralysis and 1,900 deaths annually from polio in the U.S.
1981, the space shuttle Columbia was launched for the first time. It was the first reusable manned spacecraft to make it into space.
