A Niles resident has been hospitalized after crashing near a well-known dangerous intersection in Cass County.

The crash occurred Thursday evening close to the intersection of Redfield Street and Gumwood Road near the Indiana border in Milton Township.

According to the Cass County Sheriff’s office, 23-year-old Kyra Moore was traveling east on Redfield Street when she crossed the centerline and left the roadway, crashing into some brush. She was transported to Niles Hospital for her injuries.

The intersection of Redfield Street and Gumwood Road is often traveled by both Indiana and Michigan residents. A 2017 Niles-Buchanan-Cass Area Transportation Study by the Southwest Michigan Planning Commission shows Gumwood Road averages more than 7,500 vehicles per day between the Indiana state line and Redfield Street.

The area surrounding the intersection has a history of collisions. See below for a screenshot of the MichiganCrashFacts.org 2021 crash map in the area:

The Redfield-Gumwood intersection had a roundabout scheduled to be built last year, but has been delayed due to right-of-way acquisition issues with a local land owner, according to Cass County officials.
