Congressman Fred Upton is giving high marks to the address by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the U.S. Capitol Wednesday. Zelenskyy addressed a joint session of Congress and said his country is fighting for its independence, just as the United States once did.
“We stand, we fight, and we will win because we are united,” Zelenskyy said. “Ukraine, America, and the entire free world.”
Upton issued a statement calling Zelenskyy “an inspiration to his nation and to freedom-loving people around the world.” He continued, “The tenacity and spirit of the Ukrainian people and its armed forces in the face of Russia’s barbaric aggression, much of which has targeted innocent civilians and civilian infrastructure, is a testament to the desire of people to be free of oppression. Speaking on Facebook, Congressman Bill Huizenga also praised the fighting spirit of Zelenskyy.
“We hade military experts here in the United States that didn’t think it was going to be three days, much less 300 days, of opposition, and he’s vowing to fight and continuing to fight.”
Upton says the war was not started by Ukraine, and he fully supports continued U.S. aid to that country. Huizenga said he has opposed the Russian war on Ukraine from the beginning, although his record on funding for Ukraine has been “mixed.” While he has voted for the aid, Huizenga says there should be more oversight.
