The small Van Buren County village of Breedsville lives on after voters on Tuesday shot down a proposal to dissolve it. Both Breedsville voters and Columbia Township voters rejected the dissolution question. Had the village been dissolved, its functions would have shifted to the township. Village Clerk Linda Norton tells us a local resident started a petition to dissolve Breedsville, but the voters disagreed with the idea.

“The village council is happy that the voters saw through all the misinformation, and the village council is happy to get back to doing work for the residents,” Norton said.

The resident filed the petition to dissolve the village over a lawsuit it’s facing from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy. The agency sued the village for making repairs to a failed dam without getting proper permits. The petition filer told MLive she’s going to try again. Norton couldn’t comment on the legal issue. Breedsville was founded in 1835. It was incorporated in 1883. It has 202 residents.
