Luka Garza scored 22 points to pace the Hawkeyes (12-16, 3-12). Iowa opened a quick 9-2 lead in the game, but Michigan steadily chipped away and took the lead for good on a three-point field goal by Wagner that made it 17-14 Wolverines 8:37 into the first half. Isaiah Moss added 12 points for the Hawkeyes, losers of four straight, and Tyler Cook scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Ish Smith had 22 points and nine assists, Blake Griffin narrowly missed a triple-double and the Detroit Pistons ended a three-game losing streak by beating the Atlanta Hawks 104-98 on Wednesday night. Griffin finished with 13 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists, while Andre Drummond added 13 points and 15 rebounds for Detroit, which had seven players in double figures. Andrew White III had 15 points for the Hawks in his NBA debut, while John Collins had 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Hawks, who beat the Pistons 118-115 on Sunday, were missing three key
players, including leading scorers Dennis Schroder (lower back) and Kent Bazemore (rest). Former Piston Ersan Ilyasova (shoulder) also sat out.

Raptors 122, Bulls 98 – Lowry leads Raptors to 7th win in row, 122-98 over Bulls
Kyle Lowry had 20 points and 10 assists, Serge Ibaka also scored 20 points and the Toronto Raptors cruised into the All-Star break with their seventh straight victory, 122-98 over the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday night.  Lowry made four 3-pointers, and he and Ibaka each grabbed seven rebounds.  Jonas Valanciunas added 14 points and nine rebounds to help the Raptors complete a four-game sweep against Chicago even though they only got seven points from four-time All-Star DeMar DeRozan. But Toronto shot just over 52 percent against a weak defense, sending the Bulls to their ninth loss in 11 games. Bobby Portis scored 18 points for Chicago, and Lauri Markkanen had 14s. The Bulls were simply overmatched by the Eastern Conference leaders, even though they had point guard Kris Dunn back in the lineup. He had eight points and three assists in 20 minutes after missing 11 games because of a concussion.

Pacers 108, Nets 103 – Pacers win 3rd straight, hand Nets 7th straight loss

NFL – Fox to air NFL draft along with ESPN, NFL Network
Fox Sports will broadcast the NFL draft this season, along with the NFL’s usual television partners of ESPN and NFL Network. A person familiar with the decision says Fox will show the same feed as the NFL Network. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the league and Fox haven’t announced the decision.  ESPN will still air its own draft feed but the person said the current rights deal for the draft allowed for the inclusion of another broadcaster.  Pro Football Talk first reported the deal. Fox won the rights to broadcast 11 Thursday night football games in a deal with the NFL last month, taking over a package that was previously shared by NBC and CBS.

MLB – Avisail Garcia wins arbitration vs White Sox, gets $6.7M
Chicago White Sox outfielder Avisail Garcia won his salary arbitration case against the team and will get a raise to $6.7 million instead of the club’s $5.85 million offer.  Arbitrators Phillip LaPorte, Steven Wolf and John Kagel made the decision Wednesday, a day after hearing arguments. Garcia was a first-time All-Star last year, when he was second in the AL batting race and set career bests with a .330 average, 18 homers and 80 RBIs. He made $3 million. Players lead 8-6 with decisions to be announced Thursday for pitchers Collin McHugh, Marcus Stroman, Jake Odorizzi and Trevor Bauer. Four more hearings are scheduled, and 22 decisions would be the most since players won 14 of 24 cases in 1990.

2018 Winter Olympics – PyeongChang

  • Alpine Skiing – Women’s Giant Slalom

American Mikaela Shiffrin has won gold in the women’s giant slalom in her Pyeongchang Olympic debut. She used a hard-charging final run to win her second career Olympic gold medal. The 22-year-old American standout trailed by 0.20 seconds heading into the last run, but made up ground in no time by powering through ruts that had developed on the course.  Shiffrin finished 0.39 seconds ahead of Norway’s Ragnhild Mowinckel at Yongpyong Alpine Center. Federica Brignone of Italy captured bronze, 0.46 behind Shiffrin’s combined time of 2 minutes, 20.02 seconds. First-run leader Manuela Moelgg of Italy wound up eighth. At the 2014 Sochi Games, Shiffrin won the slalom crown at age 18. She will defend that title Friday. There were still 37 lower-ranked ski racers left to go, all of whom were well back of the leaders after the first run.

  • Women’s Ice Hockey – Preliminary Round

Defending gold medalist Canada has clinched the top spot in pool play by edging the United States 2-1 in an early Olympic showdown between the dominant powers in women’s hockey. Meghan Agosta and Sara Nurse each scored in the second period, and Genevieve Lacasse made 44 saves. Canada and the United States are the only countries to ever win gold at the Olympics.  Lacasse stopped Hilary Knight at the post inside the final 90 seconds. Brianne Decker hit two posts, the second in the final seconds, before punching, pushing and shoving. Officials reviewed the final play and ruled no goal.  The Canadians also had two goals disallowed, the second midway through the third for Haley Irwin kicking the puck in off her left skate.  The Americans have not taken home gold since 1998, while Canada is here looking for a fifth straight.

  • Men’s Ice Hockey – Preliminary Round

The Olympic men’s hockey tournament has opened with a pair of surprises, with both the Americans and the favored Russians losing 3-2. Former Detroit Red Wing Jan Mursak scored the tying goal for Slovenia in the final minutes of regulation and the winning goal in overtime against the United States. As Mursak’s final shot went past goaltender Ryan Zapolski, U.S. players hung their heads on the bench before Slovenia players celebrated with their fans Wednesday.  Zapolski allowed three goals on 25 shots, including the first goal by Jan Urbas. Slovenian goaltender Gasper Kroselj stopped 34 of the 36 shots he faced to pick up the victory, giving up goals to Brian O’Neill and Jordan Greenway.

  • Snowboarding – Men’s Snowboard Cross

Pierre Vaultier of France has defended his title in men’s snowboard cross at the Pyeongchang Olympics. Vaultier barely qualified for the final after crashing during the semifinals but recovered to win his second Olympic gold medal on Thursday with relative ease. Jarryd Hughes of Australia took silver, with Spain’s Regino Hernandez earning a rare Winter Games medal for his country by taking bronze. Americans Nick Baumgartner and Mick Dierdorff advanced to the final, but both washed out on a jump and finished well back of the leaders.

  • Wanted by the IOC: A city to host the 2026 Winter Olympics

Getting bidders for the Olympics used to be easy, but no longer. That’s particularly true for the Winter Olympics. Six European cities pulled out of official bids or decided not to bid at all when the IOC sought candidate cities a few years ago for the 2022 Winter Olympics. Cities balked over soaring costs, a lack of public support or political unrest. Beijing narrowly won and IOC officials say the process highlighted the difficulty in attracting potential hosts.  Just four cities have expressed interest in the 2026 Winter Games: Stockholm; Calgary, Canada; Sion, Switzerland; and Sapporo, Japan. The International Olympic Committee says it needs to do a better job selling potential host cities on the benefits of the Olympics. Officials say they’re rethinking how the games are presented to bidders and sold to the public.
