1865 John Wilkes Booth, who shot and killed U.S. President Abraham was shot and killed in Garrett’s barn in Virginia. When Booth refused to come out of the barn, soldiers set it on fire. He was shot while still in the barn.

1954 Nationwide testing of Dr. Jonas Salk’s polio vaccine began. It was the first successful vaccine for the dreaded disease.

1962 Ranger IV, launched three days earlier, impacted the Moon’s surface. It was intended to transmit pictures of the lunar surface to Earth stations for the 10 minutes of flight prior to crashing on the Moon’s surface.

 

Music History:

1982 Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder were at No.1 on the charts with ‘Ebony and Ivory.’ This was McCartney’s 24th No.1 hit single as a songwriter. The title was inspired by McCartney hearing Spike Milligan say “black notes, white notes, and you need to play the two to make harmony folks!”
