A job fair will be held this week by the city of Benton Harbor as it seeks to find workers who can help with the replacement of lead water lines around the community and do related work. The city says Thursday’s job fair will be from 3 to 6 p.m. at city hall. Not only will those who attend be able to speak with contractors seeking workers for line replacements, but they can speak with employers who handle lead-related services. On hand will be Abonmarche, the Berrien County Health Department, BEST Early, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and BHSH Spectrum Health Lakeland. They’re looking to fill jobs that pay anywhere from $10 to $35 an hour. Mayor Marcus Muhammad advises applicants to “show up with your best foot forward, and be ready to be hired on the spot.” The city commission last month hired five firms to handle lead line replacements, and the goal is to have all of the lead water lines out of Benton Harbor by April of next year.
