State Senator Kim LaSata is asking Governor Gretchen Whitmer to declare a state of emergency in St. Joseph County following the recent storms that left damage throughout the area. LaSata has issued a statement saying some areas of her district saw up to seven inches of rain and winds between 60 and 70 miles per hour that toppled trees, causing property damage, and knocked out power. LaSata says St. Joseph County officials have done “a tremendous job with the cleanup effort in the aftermath of the devastating storms.” However, she adds more help is needed. The disaster declaration for the county would send additional resources to the area to help with recovery.
