Sound the alarm. That’s what Red Cross volunteers are doing nationwide to teach people about home fire safety. Red Cross spokeswoman Meghan Lehman says they responded to more than 17-hundred home fires in Michigan last year.
“A few minutes of preparation can prevent a tragic incident where home fires can be devastating,” says Lehman. “It’s not the property loss, but injuries and deaths.”
Lehman says you should create an escape plan in case of a fire and get out in two minutes because that’s all they time you have. She says once out, you should have a meeting spot away from the home. She says it’s also important to have working smoke detectors in all of the living areas of your home.
