Jakub Vrana scored four goals for the first time to help the Detroit Red Wings rout the Dallas Stars 7-3 and match their total number of wins from last season. Detroit picked up its 17th victory in its 49th game a year after winning 17 of 71 games in the previous pandemic-shortened season. The defending Western Conference champion Stars are vying with Nashville and Chicago to earn the Central Division’s fourth and final postseason berth. The teams will play a fourth straight game on Saturday night. Vrana was acquired from Washington for Anthony Mantha.

Pirates 4, Tigers 2 – Evans denied Baddoo, Pirates beat Tigers 4-2 with 2-run 8th
Phillip Evans kept Akil Baddoo’s drive to left field in the park in the seventh inning to help Pittsburgh escape a jam, and the Pirates scored twice in the eighth to beat the Detroit Tigers 4-2. Colin Moran and Erik González hit RBI singles with two outs in the eighth. With the score tied at 2, Baddoo nearly put the Tigers ahead, but Evans reached above the fence in left, and the ball bounced off his glove and back into the field of play. Baddoo wound up with a double, and he didn’t end up scoring.
Cubs 4, Mets 3 – F/10 – Cubs beat Mets 4-3 on Heyward’s single in 10th
Jason Heyward had a game-ending, pinch-hit single in the 10th after Dan Winkler stranded the bases loaded in the top of the inning, and the Chicago Cubs beat the New York Mets 4-3 to complete a three-game sweep. Kris Bryant had two hits and two RBIs and Willson Contreras also drove in a run as Chicago beat the Mets for the seventh straight time dating to June 2019. Pete Alonso homered for New York, which got a stellar outing from the bullpen until Edwin Díaz let in the automatic runner in the 10th.

MLB – Therapy bunny at ballpark brings smiles and is instant hit
A handsome, golden-colored therapy bunny named Alex came to the ballpark and stole the hearts of San Francisco Giants fans, attending the series opener against Miami with owners Kei Kato and Josh Row. Sporting a dark bow tie with orange crabs to represent the Giants’ colors, 4 1/2-month-old Alex earned some major screen time in the early innings — because it’s just not every day you see a rabbit at a baseball game. The bunny in the stands is believed to be a first in the 22-year history of Oracle Park, according to Giants spokeswoman Staci Slaughter.
NBA/NCAAMBB – Former Kentucky guard Terrence Clarke dies in LA car crash
Kentucky says freshman guard Terrence Clarke died following a car accident in Los Angeles. He was 19. The school announced Clarke’s death in a release, but did not include any more details. The 6-foot-7 Clarke entered the NBA draft last month after playing in just eight games last season because of a right leg injury. He averaged 9.6 points and 2.6 rebounds. On Wednesday, he signed with Klutch Sports Group.

Spurs 106, Pistons 91 – Spurs beat Pistons 106-91 to snap 5-game home skid
Derrick White had 26 points, Jakob Poeltl added 17 points and 11 rebounds and the San Antonio Spurs beat the Detroit Pistons 106-91 on Thursday night to snap a five-game home losing streak. Lonnie Walker added 18 points and Rudy Gay had 14 for San Antonio. Josh Jackson had 29 points to lead Detroit. At 18-42, the Pistons have the worst record in the Eastern Conference. The Spurs have won three of four to move into ninth in the Western Conference ahead of the Golden State Warriors. They would face each other in the play-in tournament if the standings remain the same.
Bulls 108, Hornets 91 – Vucevic dominates as Bulls pound Hornets 108-91
Nikola Vucevic scored 18 points and matched a season high with 16 rebounds, Coby White and Thaddeus Young scored 18 apiece and the Chicago Bulls beat the struggling Charlotte Hornets 108-91. The Bulls built a 14-point halftime lead and put this one out of reach in the third quarter on the way to their third win in four games. They are 6-10 since a shakeup at the trade deadline that landed Vucevic from Orlando. He made 8 of 13 shots and had six assists. Devonte’ Graham led Charlotte with 16 points. Miles Bridges scored 13 as the Hornets lost for the sixth time in seven games.
NCAAFB – Freeman seeking more disruption from Notre Dame defense
Notre Dame has a new defensive coordinator in 35-year-old Marcus Freeman. The Fighting Irish plan to use multiple fronts and aggressive play. Spring practices have seen the defense learning new schemes. Defensive end Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa says the idea is simple: Players just go and don’t have to worry about complicated schemes or rules. Notre Dame opens its season Sept. 5 at Florida State.
NCAAFB – NCAA tweaks college football OT format to shorten games
College football teams will have to go for 2 after touchdowns starting with the second overtime possession, and beginning in the third round each team will get one play to score from the 3-yard line. The NCAA playing rules oversight panel approved a proposal made last month by the playing rules committee to tweak the overtime format. The new rule will have teams run alternating 2-point plays in the third overtime instead of starting another drive at the opponent’s 25-yard line. The 2-point shootout currently starts in the fifth overtime.
NFL – Draft Preview – Lions looking for influx of talent anywhere with No. 7 pick
Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes and coach Dan Campbell have to find a player to help in the first round and many more picks after that to help turn around a team that lost 33 games the last three years. Detroit’s defense was one of the worst statistically in NFL history last season and desperately needs an influx of talent and depth at each position group. Newly acquired quarterback Jared Goff has a relatively solid line, backfield and tight end T.J. Hockenson. The Lions have voids at receiver after losing Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones, Danny Amendola and Mohamed Sanu.
NFL – Draft Preview – Bears have holes to fill on offense, in secondary in draft
The Chicago Bears need a young quarterback to go with Andy Dalton and Nick Foles and could use more playmakers on offense. They also created a big hole in the secondary when they let cornerback Kyle Fuller go for salary-cap reasons. The Bears have a first-round pick for the first time since they took linebacker Roquan Smith at No. 8 overall in 2018. And the heat is on general manager Ryan Pace and coach Matt Nagy to get it right.
