Top-seeded Michigan salvaged the Big Ten’s best hope for NCAA Tournament glory Monday with an 86-78 win over talent-rich LSU. Chaundee Brown and Eli Brooks scored 21 points each for the roller-coaster ride of a victory. The Wolverines used a 14-1 run over the decisive stretch midway through the second half to pull away and preserve. It’s a glimmer of hope for a conference that has mostly tanked these four days in Indianapolis. After the win, Michigan and Maryland were the only teams left for the Big Ten, which placed a nation-leading nine in the bracket.

Ashley Joens scored an Iowa State NCAA Tournament record 33 points, including the clinching free throw with 3.1 seconds left, to lift the Cyclones to a 79-75 women’s opening-round win over Michigan State. Iowa State made 8 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter and 6 of 8 in the final 1:41 to hold off the 10th-seeded Spartans, who trailed by 10 with 1:40 to play in the third quarter. Donovan Mitchell scored 30 points, Rudy Gobert added 21 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high nine blocks, and the Utah Jazz pounded the Chicago Bulls 120-95. The Western Conference leaders took control in the first half and rolled to their second straight win after losing five of eight. Mitchell made five 3-pointers, one shy of his season high. The two-time All-Star also had six rebounds and six assists. Gobert surpassed his previous high of eight blocks. Joe Ingles made 5 of 6 3s and finished with 17 points. Jordan Clarkson scored 16, and Mike Conley added 15 points. Zach LaVine led Chicago with 27 points.
Bucks 140, Pacers 113 – Bucks trounce Pacers 140-113 without injured Antetokounmpo
Jrue Holiday had 28 points and 14 assists, and the Milwaukee Bucks overcame the absence of Giannis Antetokoumpo to breeze past the Indiana Pacers 140-113 for their seventh consecutive victory. Antetokounmpo was sidelined by a sprained left knee. Coach Mike Budenholzer said he thinks the reigning two-time NBA MVP got hurt during a 120-113 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday. Khris Middleton had 25 points for the Bucks. The Pacers played without Malcolm Brogdon and Myles Turner.

NFL – Lions sign K Randy Bullock, QB Tim Boyle, WR Perriman
The Detroit Lions have signed kicker Randy Bullock and quarterback Tim Boyle. The Lions also announced the signing of wide receiver Breshad Perriman. Bullock spent parts of the past five seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. Prior to that, he appeared in games for the New York Jets and Houston Texans. Bullock went 21 of 26 on field goals last season, including 3 of 5 from 50 yards and beyond. The Lions need to replace two-time Pro Bowl kicker Matt Prater, who went to the Arizona Cardinals.
NFL – More suits against Texans QB
Six more women have filed lawsuits accusing Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson of sexual assault and harassment. The new suits brings the total number against the NFL player to 13. The new claims are similar those in the earlier cases. One of the latest lawsuits was filed by a woman who alleges Watson assaulted her on March 5 in Atlanta and that his behavior “is part of a disturbing pattern of preying on vulnerable women.” All of the women who have sued Watson are either licensed massage therapists or worked in a spa or similar business.
NFL – No basement blues: Goodell on hand for draft in Cleveland
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will announce the names of this year’s rookie draft class within shouting distance of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The league announced some of its plans for this year’s three-day event in Cleveland, which will include some of the prospects being in person after last year’s draft was held virtually because of the pandemic. Some of Cleveland’s iconic downtown locations will be incorporated into the three-day festivities from April 29 to May 1.
NFL – Lawyers want data on concussion payouts
The court-appointed lead lawyer for thousands of retired players suing the NFL has pledged to try to remove race as a factor in dementia testing. However, lawyers for Black players demanded he release the data on payouts by race in the $1 billion concussion settlement. They argue that Black men are being denied awards that average more than $500,000 because of testing methods that assume Black people have lower cognitive function than white people. That makes it harder to show they’ve suffered neurological damage linked to NFL concussions.

MHSAA – Ref suspended after pushing coach in the chest, MHSAA says
A Michigan high school basketball referee who pushed a coach has been suspended for the rest of the season. The incident occurred Friday night at a game between Zeeland East and Muskegon. Video showed William Ripple putting his hands on the chest of Muskegon coach Keith Guy and pushing him away during a tense exchange late in the game. The Michigan High School Athletic Association says it doesn’t condone intentional physical contact between an official and a coach. The incident is under investigation.
