Public school superintendents in Van Buren County are adding their voices to many others in the state to let kids play winter sports. All 12 have signed a letter to Governor Whitmer and the state’s chief medical executive Dr. Joneigh Khaldun saying they are “allies in the fight to quash this pandemic,” but not playing winter sports can cause student well-being to suffer. They say they believe winter sports can be done safely even without eliminating all risks as schools have shown they are able to mitigating some of that with health and safety protocols. The letter adds if there is data or evidence from other states showing resuming contact sports under strict protocols isn’t safe, it needs to be shared widely, as “we have not seen any such evidence.”
