Hawks 119, Bulls 114 – Schroder scores 24, Hawks end game on 19-4 run to beat Bulls
Dennis Schroder scored 24 points, Paul Millsap added 21 and the Atlanta Hawks ended the game on a 19-4 run to beat the Chicago Bulls 119-114 on Wednesday night. Thabo Sefolosha scored 18 and Tim Hardaway Jr. added 17, hitting four of his team’s 17 3-pointers as the Hawks pulled out their seventh straight win against Chicago. Jimmy Butler led the Bulls with 40 points. Dwyane Wade scored 33, but Chicago let a 10-point lead slip away down the stretch. It was 110-100 with less than three minutes remaining when Millsap, Schroder and Hardaway nailed 3s on consecutive possessions to start the game-ending run. Schroder gave Atlanta a one-point lead with a layup, and Dwight Howard made one of two free throws to make it 112-110 with 58.6 seconds left.

Maple Leafs 4, Red Wings 0 – Matthews’ 23rd goal helps Maple Leafs beat Red Wings 4-0
Auston Matthews scored early in the first period and Frederik Andersen made 22 saves for his third shutout of the season, leading the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 4-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night.  Roman Polak scored late in the second period and James van Riemsdyk and Nikita Soshnikov had goals in the third to give Toronto a comfortable cushion. The Maple Leafs moved a point ahead of Boston in the Atlantic standings and into third place for the division’s third guaranteed spot in the playoffs. Toronto has played five fewer games than the Bruins, putting it in a relatively favorable position to make the playoffs for the first time since 2013 and just the second time in 12 seasons. Petr Mrazek stopped 24 shots for the Red Wings.

WNBA – Delle Donne heading back to US after Lyme Disease flare up
Elena Delle Donne is returning home from China because of a flare up of Lyme Disease.  Delle Donne went over to China earlier this week to join Shanxi in the Chinese Basketball league for the playoffs. The Chicago Sky star announced in a news conference Wednesday that she would be coming back to the United States. Delle Donne has dealt with the bacterial disease since 2008, and it caused her to miss 18 games on three occasions in college at Delaware. After seemingly having it under control, she sat out 17 games for the Sky in 2014.

Tennis – Sister act at Australian Open
It will be an all-Williams final at the Australian Open. Second seed Serena Williams cruised into the final with a 6-2, 6-1 dismantling of Mirjana Lucic-Bartoli. Williams broke serve five times and wrapped up the match in just 50 minutes. The six-time Australian Open champion is in line for her 23rd Grand Slam title, a record in the Open era.  Venus Williams also advanced at Melbourne, 14 years after losing to Serena in her last Australian Open final. The 36-year-old Williams dropped a first-set tiebreaker before completing a 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 win over fellow American Coco Vandeweghe. Williams broke serve twice in taking a 4-1 lead in the second set, rallying after Vandeweghe took the tiebreak, 7-3.  Venus is in a Grand Slam final for the first time since 2009.

Musburger leaving sportscasting
Brent Musburger is ending his sportscasting career at ESPN to get in the sports handicapping business.  The 77-year old will bow out after calling the Jan. 31 basketball game between Kentucky and Georgia. Musburger came to prominence as part of CBS’s NFL Today program in the 1980’s before he was let go by the network in what was considered a salary dump.

Muskegon Community College ran away with a 107-84 win over Lake Michigan College.  The Red Hawks fell behind early and played catch-up all night but couldn’t overtake the Jayhawks.  Brian Harris led LMC with 19 points.

Lake Michigan College came away with a 59-55 win at Muskegon.  Kelsee Kinder poured in a game high 21 points for the Lady Red Hawks.  With the win, LMC keeps pace with KVCC atop the MCCAA Western Conference standings.

MHSAA – North Central Jets tie Michigan mark for consecutive wins
The North Central Jets led by senior Jason Whitens’ season-high 33 points beat Rock Mid Peninsula 76-24 Tuesday night to tie a 59-year-old Michigan mark for consecutive wins in boys’ basketball. The Escanaba Daily Press reports that the win was the 65th straight.
