The Benton Township Police Department says a woman who was injured in a late-night shooting last month is now recovering and a suspect has been arrested and is facing charges.

The investigation began on Wednesday, April 22, when officers were dispatched shortly after 10 p.m. to R&H Brothers on Highland Avenue for an assault. Upon arrival, they found a woman with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. She was taken to the hospital in serious condition and, at the time, she was unable to communicate with officers. Police initially said it was unclear where the shooting had taken place.

In an update released on Friday, the Benton Township Police Department said the victim has now made progress and has been released from the hospital. She’s been able to provide it with information on what happened.

Police have now announced the arrest of 60-year-old Craig Shivers of Benton Harbor in the shooting. Shivers was taken into custody on Tuesday, April 28, and arraigned on Friday, May 1 on one count of assault with intent to murder, along with several firearm-related charges.

Police say the case remains active and they’re continuing to seek additional information. The department thanked the public for offering it tips in the case.
