Two state representatives are visiting high schools to spread the word about Michigan’s new school cell phone ban.
State Representative Karl Bohnak met with Negaunee High School students, in the Upper Peninsula, this week to explain how the new law works.
Keep them in your lockers,” Bohnak said. “You can take them out during lunch hour, but that’s it.”
Bohnak was joined by the bill’s sponsor, state Representative Mark Tisdel of Rochester Hills, who says the state needed to take action.
“If you were going to wait for 537 local school districts to design, implement, and actively enforce a cell phone policy, you could be waiting a long time,” Tisdel said. “It removes that burden from the school districts, from the principals, from the teachers being the bad guy. Now Representative Tisdel can be the bad guy.”
The law, which saw bipartisan support, will take effect this upcoming school year.
