Next up is a national semifinal against Arizona on Saturday.
Connecticut 73, Duke 72 – Mullins Madness! Freshman’s 35-footer gives UConn a 73-72 win over Duke
Braylon Mullins sank a desperation 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds left to give UConn an astonishing 73-72 victory over top-seeded Duke, earning the Huskies a spot in the Final Four after they rallied from a 19-point first-half deficit. The Blue Devils led by three before UConn’s Silas Demary Jr. made one of two free throws with 10 seconds left. With Duke playing keep-away to prevent the Huskies from fouling, Cayden Boozer’s pass near midcourt was deflected, and after UConn came up with the ball, Mullins made a shot from well behind the 3-point line.

Michigan Wolverines men’s ice hockey punched its ticket to the Frozen Four with a hard-fought 4–3 win over Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs men’s ice hockey in the Albany Regional final. The win sends Michigan to its NCAA-record 29th Frozen Four appearance, keeping alive its pursuit of a first national title since 1998. NCAAWBB – Michigan is a contender now against experienced Texas
Michigan is a contender now, taking on Texas in the only women’s NCAA Tournament regional final matching the top two seeds. The Wolverines are in their second Elite Eight and face top-seeded Texas in the Fort Worth Regional 3 final on Monday night. The Longhorns are in their third Elite Eight in a row and last year went to their first Final Four since 2003. Wolverines coach Kim Barnes Arico asked her players to bring in quotes that resonate with them. The one that has stood out is they had to be a contender before they can be a champion.

MLB – Cubs and second baseman Nico Hoerner finalize their $141 million, 6-year contract
Nico Hoerner and the Chicago Cubs have finalized their $141 million, six-year contract that establishes the Gold Glove second baseman as a franchise cornerstone going forward. The team announced the move before its 6-3 loss to the Washington Nationals at Wrigley Field. The 28-year-old Hoerner could have become a free agent after this season, but instead chose to stay with the club that drafted him. The contract runs from 2027-32 and includes deferred money. Hoerner’s long-term deal comes days after All-Star center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong agreed to a $115 million, six-year contract with the Cubs.

The Heat have lost seven of eight. Tyler Herro scored 23 of his 31 points in the first half and Jaime Jaquez Jr. added 17 for the Heat. All-Star Bam Adebayo finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Bruce Cassidy is out as coach of the Vegas Golden Knights, who fired him Sunday and replaced him with John Tortorella. General manager Kelly McCrimmon announced the move a day after the team lost three in a row and six of its past seven games. Tortorella joins Vegas for his 24th NHL season as a head coach. He was not in the league this year and was an assistant for the U.S. at the Milan Cortina Olympics when it won gold. He coached Tampa Bay to the Stanley Cup in 2004. Cassidy led the Golden Knights to the Cup in 2023 and was fired less than three years later.
NFL – Replacement refs, kickoffs and other rule changes to be discussed at annual meeting
Replacement officials, potential rule changes, artificial intelligence, health and safety issues, international growth and flag football will be among many topics discussed when NFL owners, executives and coaches gather for their annual meeting this week in Arizona. One topic that dominated the conversation this time last year — the tush push — isn’t on the agenda because there is no proposal to eliminate the play even though it was nearly banned in a close vote in 2025. NFC coaches will speak to reporters on Monday, AFC coaches will do so on Tuesday and Commissioner Roger Goodell closes it out.
PGA – Gary Woodland wins the Houston Open for first PGA Tour title since brain surgery
Gary Woodland is a winner again just 30 months after brain surgery. Woodland produced a moment as big as his U.S. Open title at Pebble Beach when he won the Houston Open. He led by as many as seven shots and shot 67 to win by four. Woodland had surgery in September 2023 to remove a lesion on a part of the brain that caused unfounded fears of dying. And then two weeks ago he chose to go public with his harrowing struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder in an emotional Golf Channel interview. The win gets him in the Masters.
NASCAR – Chase Elliott beats Denny Hamlin at Martinsville Speedway
Chase Elliott has outdueled Denny Hamlin at Martinsville Speedway to earn his first NASCAR Cup Series victory of the season. Elliott capitalized on a shrewd gamble by crew chief Alan Gustafson to pit the No. 9 Chevrolet earlier than the other contenders. When the caution flew on the 312th lap on Sunday, Elliott was in the lead and pitted with the rest of the lead-lap drivers aside from Ross Chastain. Elliott took first from Chastain after a restart and led the final 69 laps to win by 0.565 seconds over Hamlin’s No. 11 Toyota. Joey Logano finished third, followed by Ty Gibbs and William Byron.
