A new AARP report has found the work of family caregivers across the country would be valued at $1 trillion dollars a year if they were paid for their time and services.

The organization doubled down on its commitment to supporting the 59 million Americans caring for their loved ones. AARP Michigan Director Paula Cunningham says it’s not easy.

There was a military veteran in Detroit who did two tours of service and told us caregiving for her mother was the hardest job she’s ever had,” Cunningham said. “That is why AARP Michigan has made supporting family caregivers a top priority. We’ve advocated for funding to establish Caregiving Resource Center. This is a one-stop online resource center connecting caregivers across the state with the support services they need.”

Bipartisan legislation is on the table in Lansing to provide unpaid caregivers financial help to offset costs of home modification, respite care, and medical equipment.
