The Michigan Department of Transportation is preparing to begin work on eastbound I-94 between St. Joseph and Benton Harbor as part of its three-year, $204 million highway reconstruction project.

MDOT spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells us they got delayed by about a week due to the wintry weather that hit Southwest Michigan this week. We’ll start to see some action out there soon.

Currently we are placing the temporary pavement markings, and that means that next week we’ll start to move the concrete barrier wall into place and we’re hoping by the end of next week or maybe Monday, Tuesday of the week after, we’ll have the traffic shift completed over to the westbound lanes to start the rebuild of the eastbound lanes,” Schirripa said.

Schirripa says drivers ought to know several of the eastbound ramps will be closed throughout the project.

The M-63 ramp to eastbound 94, M-139 ramp to eastbound 94, the Pipestone Road ramp to eastbound 94 — all of those will be closed. Obviously, we won’t have an eastbound 94 to connect them to for the rest of the season. And then the eastbound 94 exit to Napier Avenue, exit 30, that will be closed as well.”

Schirripa says MDOT will rebuild the eastbound I-94 bridge over Pipestone Road as part of the project. It will also be doing some rehabilitation work on the eastbound I-94 bridge over the St. Joseph River.

Schirripa says after more than two years, the project will finally be finished this fall.
