I-94 in Van Buren County is back open after being shut down in both directions due to crashes resulting from whiteout conditions on Monday.

The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department says deputies arrived at the scene of some crashes in the westbound lanes near mile marker 56 around 5:45 and saw several jackknifed semis. There were additional crashes in the eastbound lanes around mile marker 52, resulting in the highway’s total closure.

The sheriff’s department says deputies on scene also managed a 20-vehicle crash near the 55 mile marker westbound, along with an additional four-vehicle crash in the same area.

The closures caused extensive traffic delays and contributed to multiple secondary crashes and slide-offs on surrounding roads. I-94 remained closed for about three hours, reopening around 9 p.m.

Drivers are reminded to use extreme caution in severe winter weather.
