Michigan State Police say two traffic stops in southwest Michigan led to the seizure of drugs and firearms and multiple arrests. The stops were made March 7 as troopers from the Fifth District participated in the Six-State Trooper Interdiction initiative.
MSP reports the first stop happened for speeding on U.S. 12 near Tharp Lake Road in Mason Township in Cass County. Troopers say they recovered two firearms during the stop, including one that had been reported stolen. A 21-year-old Edwardsburg man was arrested and lodged in the Cass County Jail on charges of carrying a concealed weapon and receiving and concealing a stolen firearm.
The second stop occurred on I-94 near mile marker 59 in Paw Paw Township in Van Buren County for a lane violation and improper registration. Troopers say they found 20 boxes containing 240 bottles of Promethazine Hydrochloride that were not prescribed or legally purchased. Authorities say the drug is sometimes mixed with fruit juice or soda and other substances such as fentanyl before being sold illegally.
A 23-year-old Mishawaka man who was driving the vehicle was arrested and lodged in the Van Buren County Jail for carrying a concealed weapon. A passenger from South Bend was also arrested and lodged in the Van Buren County Jail for receiving and concealing a stolen firearm.
State police say the investigation into the possession of the Promethazine Hydrochloride is continuing.
