ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Yaxel Lendeborg scored 19 of his 27 points in the first half and Morez Johnson Jr. had 18 points, leading No. 3 Michigan in a 90-80 win over No. 8 Michigan State to give the Big Ten champions a 15th straight conference win Sunday. The Wolverines head to the conference tournament, hoping to earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament before shooting for the school’s second national championship and first since 1989. The Spartans were swept by their rivals in the regular season, but might get a third shot against them in a week at the Big Ten Tournament final.
NCAAMBB – MSU’s Jeremy Fears recieves tech for kick toward groin of UM’s Elliot Cadeau
Michigan State point guard Jeremy Fears drew attention for another kick toward an opponent’s groin. Fears was called for a technical after a video review Sunday that showed he swung his right leg backward and into Elliot Cadeau during the first half when the eighth-ranked Spartans played at No. 3 Michigan. In the emotionally charged first half, the Wolverines were called for two technical fouls as officials tried to keep the rivals in check.
NCAAMBB – WMU, EMU fire basketball coaches on same day after last-place MAC finishes
Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan have fired their basketball coaches on the same day. Eastern Michigan announced the school and coach Stan Heath agreed to part ways on Sunday. Western Michigan athletic director Dan Bartholomae said Dwayne Stephens would not return to coach the Broncos next season. The Eagles and Broncos were both 10-21 overall and 4-14 in the Mid-American Conference this season, tying Northern Illinois for last place. Heath and Stephens were previously assistants at Michigan State under Tom Izzo.
NCAAWBB – UCLA rolls past Iowa 96-45 for 2nd straight women’s Big Ten Tournament
Gianna Kneepkens scored 19 points and Kiki Rice added 15 points and eight assists as No. 2 UCLA rolled past No. 9 Iowa 96-45 to win its second straight Big Ten Tournament crown. Rice was named the tourney’s Most Outstanding Player. It’s the first time the Bruins have captured back-to-back postseason conference titles, and it’s also the first time they have won regular-season and league tournament titles in the same season. The Bruins also extended their school-record win streak to 25 games and their Big Ten win streak to 24. Ava Heiden scored 15 points for the Hawkeyes.

Red Wings 3, Devils 0 – Gibson and Talbot combine to make 31 saves in the Red Wings’ 3-0 win over the Devils
John Gibson and Cam Talbot combined to make 31 saves, Dominik Shine scored his first NHL goal and the Detroit Red Wings beat the New Jersey Devils 3-0 on Sunday night. Opening a four-game trip, Detroit ended a two-game losing streak and stopped the Devils’ winning streak at four. Gibson made 21 saves in first two periods, but was injured late in the second on a collision in the crease. Cam Talbot stopped 10 shots in the third. They became the first Detroit goalies to combine for a shutout since 2014. Moritz Seider and James van Riemsdyk also scored, and each assisted on Shine’s goal. Shine broke was playing his fifth NHL game of the season and the 14th of his career.
Stars 4, Blackhawks 3 – OT – Heiskanen scores in overtime to push the Stars past the Blackhawks, 4-3
Defenseman Miro Heiskanen scored 22 seconds into overtime to give the Dallas Stars a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday. Second in the Western Conference, the Stars are 11-0-1 in their last 12. Young Chicago star Connor Bedard forced the extra period by scoring with 1:20 left in regulation with the Blackhawks playing with an extra skater. Mavrik Bourque had a goal and an assist for Dallas. Nathan Bastian and Justin Hryckowian also scored, and Casey DeSmith made 12 saves. Tyler Bertuzzi and rookie defenseman Sam Rinzel also scored for Chicago, and Arvid Soderblom stopped 28 shots. The Blackhawks are 2-7-4 in their last 13.

Tyler Herro scored 25 points, Bam Adebayo scored 24 to go over the 10,000-point mark for his career, and the Miami Heat beat Detroit 121-110 to extend the Pistons’ season-worst losing streak to four games. Jaime Jaquez Jr, had 19 points and seven assists for Miami, which has won five straight and matched a season best by moving seven games over .500. Cade Cunningham finished with 26 points and 10 assists and Jalen Duren scored 24 for the Pistons, whose lead in the Eastern Conference is down to 2 1/2 games over Boston.
Kings 126, Bulls 110 – Westbrook stacks another triple-double in Kings 126-110 win over Bulls
Russell Westbrook had 23 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds for his NBA-record 208th career triple-double, and the Sacramento Kings beat the Chicago Bulls 126-110. It’s the fourth triple-double of the season for the 37-year-old, who moved within one assist of passing Mark Jackson for sixth on the NBA’s all-time list.
Blazers 131, Pacers 111 – Scoot Henderson scores 28 points as the Trail Blazers beat the reeling Pacers 131-111
Scoot Henderson scored a season-high 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting and the Portland Trail Blazers beat the skidding Indiana Pacers 131-111. Jerami Grant and Jrue Holiday added 21 points apiece for the Blazers, who handed Indiana its ninth straight defeat. Henderson also had six assists with no turnovers. Deni Avdija, who leads Portland in scoring and assists, returned from a six-game absence caused by a lower back injury. He finished with 18 points and eight assists. Indiana has dropped its past six games by an average of 20 points. This marks the team’s third losing streak of at least eight games this season. Pascal Siakam led the Pacers with 22 points and Jay Huff had 16 points and five blocks.
NBA – The Pistons aren’t deterred by a 4-game slide as their East lead starts eroding a bit
A week ago, the Detroit Pistons were flying high. Winners in eight of their last nine games and 5 1/2 games clear of Boston in the Eastern Conference, and they were looking well on their way to becoming a No. 1 seed. But the Pistons’ season-worst losing streak reached four games on Sunday night when they lost 121-110 to the Miami Heat. And Detroit’s comfortable lead atop the East over the Celtics is down to a mere 2 1/2 games. Coach J.B. Bickerstaff says the Pistons are in a rut of the sort every team experiences during the NBA season.
NASCAR – Blaney ends Reddick’s streak to give Team Penske a Phoenix weekend sweep
Ryan Blaney completed a Team Penske sweep at Phoenix Raceway by winning the Cup Series race on Sunday. The victory that denied Tyler Reddick a fourth consecutive win to start the NASCAR season. Blaney passed 49 cars to earn his 18th career victory and second at Phoenix. The victory came during a weekend celebration of Team Penske’s 60th season of competition and during a “desert doubleheader” that bundled IndyCar and NASCAR together at Phoenix. David Malukas won the IndyCar pole for Penske and then Josef Newgarden won Saturday’s race; Joey Logano won the pole for the Cup race and then Blaney completed the sweep.
NFL – NFL’s free-agent spending frenzy begins first with a legal tampering period
Ready, set, negotiate multi-million contracts. The NFL’s free agency period opens Monday with a 52-hour legal tampering period ahead of the official start of the new league year Wednesday. Edge rusher Trey Hendrickson, six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Mike Evans and Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III head the list of high-profile players who will be free to sign a contract with a new team. Quarterbacks Kirk Cousins and Kyler Murray also will be seeking new teams because they’re going to be released by their teams.
MLB – Tarik Skubal rethinks World Baseball Classic plan after an emotional US start
Tarik Skubal is thinking about pitching again for the United States in the World Baseball Classic after the Detroit Tigers ace had previously planned to make just one start. His mindset changed after he started for the U.S. in a 9-1 win over Britain on Saturday night. Skubal said he was talking with his agent, Scott Boras, and the Tigers about the situation but had not made a final decision.

MHSAA – Spring Sports Open Today with Boys’ Volleyball beginning
Even as the Winter Sports tournaments continue, spring sports open practice today. Sports like baseball and softball, track and field, girls soccer, and now for the first time ever, boys volleyball will compete as an official MHSAA sport. Also competing as Non-MHSAA sport but is hoping to get MHSAA status soon is girls flag football. St. Joseph begins the year as the state champion. The Bears won the first state title at Ford Field last year with the tournament sponsored by the Detroit Lions.
