A home on Blackhawk Trail in St. Joseph is destroyed following a fire on Monday.

St. Joseph Township Fire Station Two Chief Brian Dwan tells us crews were called out to the home on an island in the St. Joseph River shortly after noon.

“St. Joe Public Safety assisted us on scene,” Dwan said. “They got here first, we got here right behind them, and it was a fully involved structure fire. We started putting water on there. The homeowner was home. They got out safely and we’re still trying to investigate what happened. It’s still ongoing right now.”

Dwan said there were no injuries and the situation was under control by about 2 p.m.

Total loss right now and the fire is completely out. Now it’s just smoke and we’re just doing overhaul right now.”

Smoke from the fire could be seen miles away.

In all, firefighters from St. Joseph Township, the city of St. Joseph, and the Sodus Township Fire Department were all on scene.
