If your mental health is suffering, it could have a negative impact on your heart.

There’s a mind-heart connect, according to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Chief Medical Officer Dr. James Grant.

We’ve shown that anxiety actually can increase the chances of heart disease,” Grant said. “Think about it. You’re anxious, you produce hormones, those hormones actually go to your heart, and when you’re exercising, you tend to like run off those things that are worrying you. You tend to run off things that are getting you down.”

Grant says if you’re having mental health issues, you should see a therapist, possibly take medication, and exercise.

This is Heart Month, but Dr. Grant wants heart health to be a focus all year long.
