The City of Hartford is notifying the public about a sanitary sewer overflow at its Wastewater Treatment Plant earlier this month.

City officials say the incident occurred February 9 at about 4 p.m., when an equipment failure caused an estimated 50,000 gallons of partially treated wastewater to be released outside the normal treatment process.

Officials say plant staff responded immediately and all of the wastewater was contained within plant property. The overflow did not reach the Paw Paw River, and no surface waters were affected.

The city says there is no known risk to the public or the environment. Anyone seeking more information can contact the Hartford Wastewater Treatment Plant at 269-621-2289.
