Utility providers around Michigan are warning customers to expect a sharp spike in their next bill.
The first bills reflecting January’s bitter cold temperatures are reaching customers now. Henry Decker is from DTE, and says it’s just a reality of winters like this.
“Can’t predict the weather, but this might be the highest bill that customers may see all year,” Decker said.
Decker says when you get that next bill, know that it could be an extra $25, $50, or more dollars compared to your previous bill. And he says electric companies do offer support for those who need it.
“Or reach out to some of our partnering agencies like the United Way or Salvation Army. And then we have a number of programs that are funded to help people with their bills if they truly are struggling.”
In Southwest Michigan, call your utility if you’re having trouble with your bill, whether your provider is Indiana Michigan Power, Consumers Energy, or a municipal service. You can also call 211 to look for programs assisting those in need.
