Michigan Works of Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties is offering free math workshops throughout the month of January to help adults strengthen basic skills, tackle challenging topics, and prepare to earn their GEDs.

Mary Morphey with Kinexus Group tells us Michigan Works often sees students in its adult education program struggling with math.

We just know one of the hardest subjects for individuals that are either pursuing their GED or in general is math, and so we’ve designed these workshops to provide that additional support,” Morphey said.

The workshops will be held every Tuesday and Friday in Benton Harbor and feature hands-on practice and clear instruction designed for adult learners. Morphey says they’ll cover all kinds of math topics in sessions led by the Michigan Works adult education staff. She says this is one way for a worker to overcome obstacles they might encounter.

“Individuals that are looking to be promoted at work, but maybe they don’t have their GED, that’s the one thing holding them back. We’ll enroll them, we’ll get them started, and then we can provide that additional support in various subjects, such as math.”

The workshops are meant to reduce barriers for people who may feel intimidated about returning to school.

Morphey says the sessions are open to walk-ins, but those who are interested in signing up for adult education should reach out to Michigan Works. You can learn more right here.
