With many off this week for the holidays, you may be looking for things to do, and there are plenty of places to go cross country skiing in Michigan.

You could take a trip to Northern Michigan’s Higgins Lake, where there’s Cross Country Ski Headquarters. It has six cross-country trails, lessons, rental equipment, and a cafe. Founder Bob Frye says they came out of a 1970s revolution as the equipment changed.

In the UP, they’ve been cross-country skiing for 300 years, but they knew what they were doing,” Frye said. “But for us, us trolls that live below the bridge, cross-country skiing really came to life once we figured out how to make a cross-country ski that didn’t need wax.”

Frye says once you try cross-country skiing, it’s easy. January 10 is Winter Trails Day, and many cross-country areas will offer free lessons. There’s more information at MyWinterTrails.com.

And don’t forget — you can cross-country skii closer to home at both Madeline Bertrand County Park and Love Creek County Park in Berrien County.
