Flu cases are soaring in Michigan with the state being one of the worst in the nation for infections.

According to new data from the CDC, Michigan is one of just five states reporting very high levels of flu activity. That’s the second highest level of severity on the CDC’s nationwide scale of flu cases.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says 653 people so far this year have been hospitalized for the flu in Michigan. Southeast Michigan has seen the most cases of the flu, and only 23% of Michiganders have gotten their flu shot this year.

Nationwide, more than 7.5 million people have had the flu and more than 3,000 people have died from it.

Health officials say the best way to protect yourself is getting a flu shot.
