You may soon be putting that Christmas tree into storage for another year, but if you have a real tree, you have several other options to consider.

For example, the Christmas tree can be recycled or used for gardening projects. That’s what many cities will do. MSU Extension Christmas tree educator Bill Lindberg says you could mulch the tree on your own property, but many don’t have the equipment to do so.

“A really good way to kind of pay it forward for helping the soil the next year by getting your Christmas tree turned into wood chips,” Lindberg said.

Lindberg says to check for recycling dates in your community.

All your ornaments out, get all your lights out, all that type of thing. But besides that, once the tree’s bare, you can pull it out. Some people do like putting it, when they’re getting it out of the tree stand, put it into a sheet.”

Lindberg adds Christmas trees are not great firewood. So know that leaving it out or dropping it off to be recycled is the best option.
