Governor Gretchen Whitmer is calling for everyone to ease the political rhetoric in the United States following the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
On social media this week, Whitmer said in the face of violence — like the plot to kidnap her, the assassination attempt on President Trump, and the murder of a Democratic lawmaker in Minnesota — we must choose respect and understanding.
“Let’s think about our kids,” Whitmer said. “First-time voters in next year’s election were born in 2008. All they’ve known most of their lives is a political system where too often the loudest, most extreme voices win. They navigate an online world where they’re intentionally fed divisive content designed to rile them up. They hear about public officials facing threats and see gruesome videos of shootings just a scroll away.”
Whitmer says we cannot afford to give up on each other.
Several men are serving prison sentences for plotting to kidnap Whitmer during the COVID pandemic.
