1878 – the American Bar Association was founded in Saratoga, New York by 75 lawyers from 20 states.
1887 – Dan Casey struck out in the 9th inning of a game against the New York Giants. Sports columnist Ernest L. Thayer went home and began work on a poem entitled Casey at the Bat.
1959, Hawaii was admitted as the 50th State.
