There’s a debate over a proposal to implement stiffer penalties for parents of kids who break curfew in Detroit.

Right now, penalties include a $75 fine for a first offense and $100 for a second offense. The proposed amendment would increase those to $250 and $500, respectively. Police Chief Todd Bettison spoke at a community meeting this week.

“Yes, we did issue parental responsibility tickets, and when the parents go before the court, we’re going to find out what’s going on in the home and offer them support…conflict resolution, wrap our arms around the juveniles as well to see what we can do to help them,” Bettison said. “This is about helping.”

Kids ages 15 and younger can’t be out without a parent past 10 p.m. while 16 and 17 year olds can stay out until 11.
