1868 Following its ratification by the necessary three-quarters of U.S. states, the 14th Amendment, granting citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the United States—including formerly enslaved people—is officially adopted into the U.S. Constitution.
1943 President Franklin Roosevelt announced the end of coffee rationing. Coffee had been restricted due to World War II. It was rationed to 1 pound per family every five weeks.
1978 National Lampoon’s ‘Animal House’ starring John Belushi was released in theatres. (Toga! Toga! Toga!)
Music History:
1969 Police in Moscow reported that thousands of public phone booths had been vandalized after thieves were stealing parts of the phones to convert their acoustic guitars to electric. A feature in a Russian youth magazine had shown details on how to do it.
1979 The Knack hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “My Sharona.” It became the biggest hit of the year and a defining track of the late 70’s power pop scene.
