1865 News of the end of the Civil War reached Galveston, Texas with Union army general Gordon Granger’s reading of federal orders. Confederate General Robert E. Lee had surrendered two months earlier.
Along with the Emancipation Proclamation, this freed the slaves. This event has been celebrated as Juneteenth since 1866 and became a U.S. federal holiday in 2021.
1939 Atlanta, Georgia became the first major U.S. city to ban pinball, stating that pinball led to gambling, moral decay, and crime. It became known as “Pinhibition.”
1978 Jim Davis comic strip about a lazy, overweight, coffee drinking cat named Garfield debuted in 40 newspapers. It was eventually syndicated in over 2,500 newspapers and journals, earning the Guinness World Record for being the world’s most widely syndicated comic strip.

1973 Edgar Winter’s US No.1 hit ‘Frankenstein’ was awarded a gold record. Winter named the song because of how many cuts and patches were contained in the original studio tape.
