1865 The 13th amendment abolishing slavery in the U.S. was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives. It would then go on to the states for ratification.
1933 The First radio broadcast of The Lone Ranger on WXYZ, Detroit. Although originally aimed at children, its audience was about half adults.
1961 The U.S. launched a chimpanzee “Ham the Astro chimp” in to space aboard a Mercury test flight by NASA. Ham had been trained to respond to lights and operate controls. He survived the mission and lived in zoos until his death in 1983.
Music History:
1970 The Jackson Five went to No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘I Want You Back’. The song was originally written for Gladys Knight & The Pips and was the first of four No.1’s for the group.
