1776 Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Ben Franklin, Roger Sherman and Robert Livingstone were appointed to prepare the Declaration of Independence.
1805 A fire that started in the morning burned Detroit to the ground by afternoon. All that remained were a few brick chimneys. It was believed to have started when a local baker failed to extinguish the ashes from his pipe when he knocked the tobacco out. Amazingly, no one died in that fire.
1982 E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial opened in theatres. Ferris Bueller’s Day off opened the same day.
