Two Berrien County elementary schools are receiving the gift of free books from the Michigan Education Trust.

MET’s Heather Barthelmes tells us the trust has donated more than $1,000 each to 19 schools around the state so they can purchase books.

We decided to do this type of promotion in conjunction with the celebration of our 35th anniversary, and as a part of that, we wanted to give back,” Barthelmes said. “So, one of the things we did was put out a call to local elementary schools mostly to see if any of these schools wanted to become a school partner of the Michigan Education Trust.”

The Michigan Education Trust enables parents to lock in college tuition for their children at current rates so when the child heads off to college, there can be significant savings. Barthelmes says by giving books to children, MET can help set them on the right path.

We all know that books are a foundation to every child’s education, and the more access that they have, the more places they can explore and things they can learn about.”

Among the schools receiving the donations are Watervliet South Elementary School and the Sodus Township School District Number Five’s River School. They’ve each been given a $1,020 gift certificate from Schuler Books, enabling each school to purchase about 70 books of their choice.
