The Michigan Department of Transportation is expanding its Paint the Plow program statewide.

MDOT spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells us Paint the Plow started last year as a pilot to engage students and encourage them to flex their artistic muscles. This year, students across the state are invited to submit their art ideas for the plows.

What we’re painting isn’t the actual plow truck, we’re painting the blades, those big front plow blades, and those will be on display,” Schirripa said. “Instead of being used to actually plow roads, we’re going to use them as a display. They will be visible during the winter along various state highways.”

Schirripa says students should follow this year’s theme, which is “Go hands-free. Just drive. It’s the law.” It promotes the state’s new hands-free driving law.

MDOT will accept Paint the Plow design applications through May 17. Selected schools will be notified before the end of the 2024 school year and arrangements will be made for the delivery of their plow blade in the fall. Schools will then have about six weeks to complete their design before MDOT staff return for the completed plow blade.
